If you know anything about me, it’s probably that I know nothing about any form of “sports ball,” especially football. My wife, on the other hand, could probably lead a winning team and will occasionally coach me on big sports news so I’m not completely in the dark. For example, I know the Buccaneers are going to the Super Bowl.
One antic about football that even I have noticed, regardless of who’s playing, is that someone’s blind side is always wide open. At some point in every game, it seems there is a gaping hole in the field for an offensive player to plow through. And while I’m not football savvy enough to get frustrated, even I can’t help but wonder what, exactly, the team was thinking. Why is this a consistent problem, over and over again, that no one has prioritized to fix?
Turning from the TV screen to my work screen, I often find myself frustrated over this same issue. Global enterprises with publicly trusted names have craters, not just holes, in their compliance efforts. Especially today, with an increasingly popular remote workforce, even untraced signing platforms present a weak spot for document integrity to be compromised.
I regain my sanity, however, when I look at the momentum made by the justice system this past year. I mean, if the Courts were being honored at the Superbowl for their record-breaking transformation this past year, I would watch it for the first time ever – commercials and all!
Like everyone, the justice system struggled at the start of the pandemic, unsure how to quickly stand up make-shift processes and keep justice in motion. Since then, however, leaders in the justice space have podcasted, Zoomed and conferenced about the positive shifts and opportunities that resulted from going remote. Courts across the country, despite being able to open their courthouses soon, are implementing sustainable, digital practices because, now that their blindside is covered, they are better protected and simply cannot afford to resort back to inefficient practices that make justice less accessible.
One area of truly great security concern has been authenticating electronic signatures and closely monitoring how sensitive information, like court orders and citizen records, are being interacted with. Long before the pandemic, our team was hard at work rebuilding the framework of our electronic signing platform, TrueSign – unaware of how critically important its compliance and data security features would be less than a year later. Our goal had been to build an electronic signing tool that did more than just apply digital signatures – that it would work together with workflows (especially OnBase) to monitor chain of custody and better meet overall compliance standards.
Today, TrueSign has been called an “anchor” by Clerks, Court Managers and Judges alike who send me emails, impressed and inconceivably happy with a signature platform that accounts for both today’s needs and the feedback they’ve given us in the past: real-time, contactless signing with QR code capability, the ease and intuitiveness of securely collecting signatures from external parties, and the efficiency gains made by being able to one-click sign off on orders, from their smartphone or tablet, when they’re watching a “sports ball” game in their recliner instead of upstairs in their home office.

It may seem like I’m bragging, and I might be just a bit, but really I’m just over the moon that, finally, everyone is jumping on board to fill the holes in their remote signing processes. Most importantly, that the members of our justice system are the ones suiting up to be the early adopters and set the standard for the rest of the world – after all, our justice system personnel are ensuring access to justice, regardless of challenges faced, and if anyone is going to rise up to today’s occasion for improved data governance thank goodness it’s you!

Senior Court Research Associate Diane Robinson chats with NCSC about the current case data, revealing that cases involving children, families and the elderly are accumulating due to cases that were deferred during the height of the pandemic, and because of reduced manpower after furloughs and budget cuts left the courts short staffed.
Despite the backlog, Diane illustrates how well the courts truly have responded to this global crisis and offers some insight on how she feels courts can continue hearing these backlogged cases, best supporting the cases and populations most vulnerable to delayed justice.
