It was just a couple weeks ago that my colleagues and I were podcasting about the evolution of electronic filing, celebrating its wide-spread success in increasing access to justice and sharing our predictions on just how foundational digital court technology will be for the future of courts. So much excitement was naturally curating around this some-what mature concept of eFiling and the potential of all it stands for in today’s world.

Never did it cross my mind that, in a matter of weeks, a pandemic would abruptly stop so many national operations. That hearings would halt, jails would end visitation and courts would, for the most part, close their doors. Watching this public health crisis uproot our justice system in such short time is disheartening, to say the least.

As we do our part to “flatten the curve” with social distancing, let’s also remember the importance of remote accessibility – a foundational pillar behind all court technology. Ensuring cloud-based case retrieval, digitally routed information between external agencies and the ability to keep our justice system up and running, even from the home offices of clerks, judges, attorneys and necessary court personnel, is also a means of doing our part.

I encourage you to explore the invaluable safety net that digital transformation provides, and how it will equip you for all that’s unforeseen tomorrow. We’ve built this newsletter to serve as your starting point so, as you click through it, please make note of your questions and bring them to our free, upcoming electronic court webinar with NCSC’s Jim McMillan, “Justice Knows No Quarantine: Unlocking Virtual Court Operations When the Physical Doors Close.” Even if your calendar is booked and you can’t log on for the live stream, I encourage you to register anyways so we can send you the recording afterward.

Stay healthy, folks.

Scott

Bridging the Gap between eFiling and the Paperless Court

A district court administrator, business systems analyst, and information systems director from three different courts across the country agree to be panelists on an eFiling webinar.

It sounds like the beginning of a good intention gone wrong, but it was actually an extremely informative hour learning about the benefits of eFiling for Superior Courts from three critical court perspectives.

Of course, Scott, ImageSoft’s Product Visionary, was only poking fun, but he makes a valid point: what it means to be a digitally transformed court today is much different than even just a couple years ago.
